🔴If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance (into Paradise). [Al-Qur’an 4:31]
🔴Those who avoid the major sins and immoralities, only committing slight ones. Indeed, your Lord is vast in forgiveness. He was most knowing of you when He produced you from the earth and when you were fetuses in the wombs of your mothers. So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him. [Al-Qur’an 53:32]

📚 MAJOR SINS(KITAB al KABA’IR) by Imam Shamsu ed-Deen Dhahabi(radhiyallahu anhu).

1️⃣ Associating partners with Allah (Shirk)
♦️Higher Shirk: worshipping beings other than Allah. [*Al-Qur’an*].
♦️Lesser Shirk: Ostentation(showing off/Riya). [Al-Qur’an 107:4-6]
Prophetﷺ, “Should I not inform you of that which I fear for you even more than the dangers of dajjaal? It is the hidden shirk: A person stands to pray and he beautifies his prayer because he sees the people looking at him”. [Sunan Ibn Majah 4204, also refer Musnad Ahmad vol. 3 pg. 30]
2️⃣ Committing murder: [Al-Qur’an 25:68]
3️⃣ Performing Sorcery [Al-Qur’an 2:102]
4️⃣ Not performing the Prayers. [Al-Qur’an 19:59]
5️⃣ Not paying the Zakah(Charity). [Al-Qur’an 3:180, 41:7]
6️⃣ Breaking the fast of Ramadhan or not fasting in Ramadhan without a valid excuse.
Prophetﷺ said,
♦️“Islam is built upon five pillars: testifying that there is no true god except Allah and that Muhammad is the messenger of Allah, performing the prayers, paying the Zakah, making the pilgrimage to the house, and fasting the month of Ramadhan.” [Sahih al-Jami 2837, Sahih Muslim 16, Al-Bukhari ]
♦️“Whoever breaks the fast of Ramadan without having a legitimate excuse or being ill, he cannot make up for that day, even if he were to undertake a perpetual fast.” [Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Ad-Darimi]
7️⃣ Not performing the Hajj(pilgrimage) when one has the ability to do so. [refer above hadith]
8️⃣ Showing Disrespect to One’s Parents. [Al-Qur’an 17:23]
9️⃣ Cutting off the ties of relationships/Severing the Ties of One’s Relatives. [Al-Qur’an 47:22]
1️⃣0️⃣ Committing adultery or fornication. [Al-Qur’an 17:32]
1️⃣1️⃣ Committing sodomy. [Al-Qur’an 11:79-83]
Prophetﷺ said, “Allah will not look at a person (with pleasure) who commits sodomy with a man or a woman.” [Sahih al-Jami 7678]
1️⃣2️⃣ Taking or paying interest/Accepting Usurious Gain. [Al-Qur’an 2:275]
1️⃣3️⃣ Devouring the wealth of orphans. [Al-Qur’an 4:10]
1️⃣4️⃣ Forging statements concerning Allah or forging Hadith. [Al-Qur’an 39:60]
Prophetﷺ said, “Whoever (intentionally) ascribes to me what I have not said then (surely) let him occupy his seat in Hell-fire.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 109]
1️⃣5️⃣ Fleeing from the battlefield. [Al-Qur’an 8:16]
1️⃣6️⃣ The Leader Who Misleads His Followers, The Tyrant and The Oppressor. [Al-Qur’an 42:42]
1️⃣7️⃣ Arrogance, Pride, Conceit, Vanity, Boastful, Vain & Haughtiness. [Al-Qur’an 16:23]
1️⃣8️⃣ Giving false testimony/Bearing False Witness. [Al-Qur’an 25:72]
1️⃣9️⃣ Drinking alcoholic beverages. [Al-Qur’an 5:90]
2️⃣0️⃣ Gambling(Qimar). [Al-Qur’an 5:90]
2️⃣1️⃣ Slandering innocent women(accusing woman of adultery). [Al-Qur’an 24:23]
2️⃣2️⃣ Misappropriating something from the booty/spoils of the war, Muslim funds or zakat. [Al-Qur’an 3:161]
2️⃣3️⃣ Stealing/Theft. [Al-Qur’an 5:38]
2️⃣4️⃣ Highway men who menace the road. [Al-Qur’an 5:33]
2️⃣5️⃣ The engulfing oath(making false oath). [Al-Qur’an 3:77]
Prophetﷺ said, “If someone is ordered to take an oath and he takes a false oath in order to take possession of property of a Muslim, then he will incur Allah’s wrath when he meets Him.” [Sahih al-Jami 6083, Sunan Abu Dawud Book 15, 3236]
2️⃣6️⃣ Committing oppression/Taking people’s property through falsehood. [Al-Qur’an 26:227]
2️⃣7️⃣ Levying illegal taxes
Prophetﷺ said(regarding a woman who turned to Allah in repentance), “By Him in Whose Hand is my life, she has made such a repentance that even if a wrongful tax-collector were to repent, he would have been forgiven.” [Sahih Muslim 1695]
Prophet ﷺ said, “The wrongful tax collector will not enter paradise.” [Sunan Abī Dāwūd 2937, Sahih(Al-Suyuti)]
2️⃣8️⃣ Consuming forbidden wealth or taking it by any means. [Al-Qur’an 2:188]
2️⃣9️⃣ Committing suicide. [Al-Qur’an 4:29]
3️⃣0️⃣ Being a perpetual liar. [Al-Qur’an 3:61]
3️⃣1️⃣ The dishonest judge. [Al-Qur’an 5:44]
3️⃣2️⃣ Engaging in bribery. [Al-Qur’an 2:188]
3️⃣3️⃣ Women imitating men and vice-versa.
Prophetﷺ said, “Allah’s curse is upon men who imitate women and upon women who imitate men.” [Mishkat al-Masabih 4429, Sunan Ibn Majah 1903,1904, Sunan Abi Dawud 4097, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2784 & other similar narratives in Bukhari, Muslim, Dawud]
3️⃣4️⃣ The pimp & the one who permits his wife to fornicate (being a Dayyouth).
Dayyouth: is the one who approves the indecency of his womenfolk and who is void of jealousy or the pimp who facilitates indecency between two people.
Prophetﷺ said, “Allah has forbidden the Paradise to three people: the alcoholic, the runaway slave, and the one who is complacent in the face of the evil deeds that his family is performing.” [Sahih al-Jami 3047, Musnad Ahmad 5372]
3️⃣5️⃣ Marrying for the purpose of making a woman allowable for another.
Prophetﷺ said: “Curse be upon the one who marries a divorced woman with the intention of making her lawful for her former husband and upon the one for whom she is made lawful.” [Sunan Abi Dawood 2076]
3️⃣6️⃣ Not keeping oneself clean from all the traces of urine.
Ibn Abbas reported that Prophetﷺ passed by a grave and said, “These two are being punished and they are not being punished for something hard. But it is a great sin. One of them did not keep himself clean form his urine and the other went around spreading tales.” [Sahih Muslim 292, similar narratives in Bulugh al-Maram 103, Sunan an-Nasa’i 1345, Sunan Ibn Majah 348]
3️⃣7️⃣ Showing-off in good work. [Al-Qur’an 107:4-6]
3️⃣8️⃣ Learning sacred knowledge only for worldly gain or concealing it. [Al-Qur’an 2:159, 3:187]
3️⃣9️⃣ Breaching trusts(breach of faith). [Al-Qur’an 8:27]
4️⃣0️⃣ Reminding people of one’s kindness/one’s charity to them. [Al-Qur’an 2:264]
4️⃣1️⃣ Denying predestination(disbelieving in destiny/qadr). [Al-Qur’an 54:47-49]
Narrated Abu Hurairah: “The idolaters of the Quraish came to the Messenger of Allahﷺ arguing about Qadar, so the following was revealed: The day they will be dragged on their faces into the Fire. Taste you the touch of Hell! Verily, We have created all things with Qadar(54:48 & 49).” [Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3290]
4️⃣2️⃣ Listening to people’s private conversation. [Al-Qur’an 49:12]
4️⃣3️⃣ The tale bearer who stirs up enmity between people.
Prophetﷺ said, “He who stirs up enmity among people by quoting their words to each other will not enter paradise.” [Bukhari, Muslim, similar narrative in Abu Dawud, also refer Hadith in point-36.]
4️⃣4️⃣ Cursing others.
Prophetﷺ said, “Abusing a Muslim is Fusuq (i.e., an evil-doing), and killing him is Kufr (disbelief).” [Sahih al-Bukhari 6044]
4️⃣5️⃣ Breaking one’s promises or pledge.
Prophetﷺ said, “Whoever has (the following) four characteristics will be a pure hypocrite: “If he speaks, he tells a lie;
if he gives a promise, he breaks it, if he makes a covenant he proves treacherous;
and if he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent evil insulting manner (unjust). And whoever has one of these characteristics, has one characteristic of a hypocrite, unless he gives it up.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 3178]
4️⃣6️⃣ Believing fortune tellers & astrologers.
Prophetﷺ said, “Whoever goes to a fortuneteller and asks him about something will not have his prayers accepted for forty nights.” [Sahih Muslim 2230, Ahmad & Abu Dawud]
4️⃣7️⃣ A wife being rebellious to her husband [Al-Qur’an 4:34]
4️⃣8️⃣ Picture making
Prophetﷺ said, “Every maker of graven images will be in Hellfire. Every image he made will be given a soul to punish him in Hell.” Ibn Abbas said, “If you must do so, make images of trees or whatever does not have a soul within it.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2110]
4️⃣9️⃣ Loudly Lamenting for the Dead or When Afflicted with an Adversity(Striking one’s self, wailing, tearing one’s clothing, pulling one’s hair & similar deeds as a form of mourning).
Prophetﷺ said, “He who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways and traditions of the Days of Ignorance is not one of us.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 1294]
5️⃣0️⃣ Excess against others. [Al-Qur’an 42:42]
5️⃣1️⃣ Overburdening and arrogance against others.
Prophetﷺ said, “Allah will torture those who torture people in this world.” [Sahih Muslim 2613]
5️⃣2️⃣ Hurting one’s neighbors
Prophetﷺ said, “A person whose neighbor is not safe from his mischief will not enter paradise.” [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 46]
5️⃣3️⃣ Hurting or reviling Muslims. [Al-Qur’an 33:58]
5️⃣4️⃣ Harming the servants of Allah
Prophetﷺ said, “Allah said, ‘I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine.’” [Sahih al-Bukhari 6502]
5️⃣5️⃣ Dragging the Hem Of One’s Garment Out of Conceit.
Prophetﷺ said, “Allah will not look at the person who drags his garment (behind him) out of conceit.” [Sahih al-Bukhari 5783]
5️⃣6️⃣ Men wearing silk or gold.
Prophetﷺ said, “Allah has permitted silk and gold to the females of my Ummah, and has forbidden them to the males.” [Sunan al-Nasā’ī 5265]
5️⃣7️⃣ Fleeing of the slave
Prophetﷺ said, “When the slave runs away from his master, his prayer is not accepted.” [Sahih Muslim 70]
5️⃣8️⃣ Slaughtering in other than Allah’s name. [Al-Qur’an 6:122]
5️⃣9️⃣ Falsely claiming that somebody is one’s father.
Prophetﷺ said, “He who (falsely) attributes his fatherhood to anyone besides his real father, knowing that he is not his father, will be forbidden to enter Jannah.” [Riyad as-Salihin 1802]
6️⃣0️⃣ Arguing, picking apart another’s words and quarrelling.
Prophetﷺ said, “No people go astray after having followed right guidance, but those who indulge in disputes.’ Then he recited the Verse: “Nay! But they are a quarrelsome people.” [Sunan Ibn Majah 48]
6️⃣1️⃣ Withholding excess water from others.
Prophetﷺ said, “Whoever denies others his surplus water or pasturage, Allah shall deny him His blessings on the Day of Judgment.”
[Reported in Ahmad, also refer Bukhari, Sahih al-Jami 6436, Sunan Ibn Majah 2479]
6️⃣2️⃣ Stinting When Weighing or Measuring Out Goods and Similar Merchandise(Not measuring the weights properly). [Al-Qur’an 83:1-3]
6️⃣3️⃣ Feeling secure from Allah’s planning/devising. [Al-Qur’an 7:99]
6️⃣4️⃣ Despairing of the Mercy of Allah and Losing of Hope. [Al-Qur’an 12:87]
6️⃣5️⃣ Forgoing the Congregational Prayer to Pray Alone Without a Legal Excuse.
Prophetﷺ said, “If anyone hears him who makes the call to prayer and is not prevented from joining the congregation by any excuse–he was asked what an excuse consisted of and replied that it was fear or illness–the prayer he offers will not be accepted from him.” [Sunan Abi Dawud 551]
6️⃣6️⃣ Constantly Missing the Friday and Congregational Prayer Without a Valid Excuse.
Prophetﷺ said, “Whoever missed three jumu’ahs out of negligence, Allah will place a seal over his heart.” [Sunan an-Nasa’i 1369, also refer Sunan Ibn Majah 794, Sunan Ibn Majah 1125, Mishkat al-Masabih 1370, Sahih Muslim 865]
6️⃣7️⃣ Bringing loss to the bequest. [Al-Qur’an 4:12]
6️⃣8️⃣ Deception and evil schemes. [Al-Qur’an 35:43]
6️⃣9️⃣ Spying on the Muslims & revealing their weaknesses. [Al-Qur’an 60:1]
Including in this subject is the story of Hatib Ibn Abi Balta’ah mentioned in Hadith Sahih al-Bukhari 6939.
7️⃣0️⃣ Disparaging the Companions of the Prophetﷺ.
Prophetﷺ said, “Do not revile my Companions; by him in whose hand my soul is, if one of you contributed the amount of gold equivalent to Uhud, it would not amount to as much as the mudd of one of them, or half of it(or what they have done).” [Sunan Abi Dawud 4658, Sunan Ibn Majah 161, Sahih Muslim 2540, Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3861]
Only Allāh subḥānahu wa ta’āla knows the best…
🤲Allāhumma innaka khalaqta nafsī
wa anta tawaffāhā,
laka mamātuhā wa maḥyāhā,
in aḥyaytahā faḥfaẓhā,
wa in amattahā faghfir lahā.
Allāhumma innī as’aluka ‘l-`āfiyah.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ خَلَقْتَ نَفْسِي
وَأَنْتَ تَوَفَّاهَا،
لَكَ مَمَاتُهَا وَمَحْياهَا،
إِنْ أَحْيَيْتَهَا فَاحْفَظْهَا،
وَإِنْ أَمَتَّهَا فَاغْفِرْ لَهَا.
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ العَافِيَةَ
[O Allah, You have created my soul and You take it back. Unto You is its death and its life. If You give it life then protect it, and if You cause it to die then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for strength.]
