Al-Isti’aathah means asking for refuge, or protection.
“So when you want to recite the Qur’aan, seek refuge with Allaah from Shaytaan (Satan), the outcast (the cursed one)”
[The Qur’an chapter al-Nahl 16:98]
The Shaytaan (satan/devil) is most concerned in distracting us from the matters that bring us close to Allah.
Satan said (to Allah): “Because You have put me in error, I will surely sit in wait for them [i.e., mankind] on Your straight path.
I will approach them from their front, their back, their right, their left, and then You will find most of them ungrateful.”
[The Qur’an chapter Al-A’raf, Ayat 16-17]
The Shaytaan’s evil whispering is much stronger when we intend a worship, as opposed to when we want to commit a sin.
And the greatest worship that the devil wants to distract us from, is the word of Allah, because when you read the Qur’an, this is Allah speaking to us, and the Shaytaan wants to cut the conversation between the servants and their lord.
This matter is so important to the point that Allah himself commanded us to say the Al-Isti’aathah before we read the Qur’an.
This is why we are commanded by Allah to recite Al-Isti’aathah before we read the Qur’an.
Al-Isti’aathah is to say:
أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم
Audhubillahi mina’shaitaan’ir’rajeem
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.
